Specialist Spotlight
We recently sat down with Lead Liability Underwriter, Niall Casey, who talks us through his career trajectory, from a part-time admin role to a key figure at MX Commercial.
Niall's professional journey to Lead Liability Underwriter
In 2005, fresh out of university with a degree in corporate management, Niall began his career at GB Underwriting, initially taking on part-time administrative duties. GB Underwriting was acquired by Specialist Risk Group (SRG) in 2021, forming the MGA, MX Commercial.
Niall's interests in statistics and analytics, nurtured during his time at university, found a perfect outlet in his role as an underwriter. With GB Underwriting co-owner Paul Griffith as a family friend, and Niall's sister and mother already working in the insurance industry, the path was paved for Niall’s career!
Russell Brown, fellow Lead Liability Underwriter and co-owner of GB Underwriting, emerged as a key mentor, guiding Niall in honing his technical expertise. In Niall’s current role, his daily responsibilities involve overseeing the renewal book, concentrating on new business prospects and extending mentorship to his team.
Earning the colleague recognition award
Niall's dedication and hard work came to fruition with the 2023 SRG colleague recognition awards, where Niall won the MX award. A surprise, but not unwarranted, Niall attributes his success to a consistent dedication to delivering his best. Aligning with SRG's ethos of being a good colleague, Niall emphasises the importance of being open and available to team members, fostering an environment that encourages growth.
“Throughout this year, Niall has been dependable, reliable, hard-working, trustworthy, just a go-to person for everything.” – Ian Cook, Managing Director of MX
Market responses to Net Zero targets
The UK Government's resolute commitment to reducing carbon emissions has sent ripples across various sectors. Within MX Commercial, Niall observes a discernible shift in the construction industry towards more sustainable projects and energy-efficient solutions such as eco-friendly housing and energy-efficient heating methods.
Brokers are actively targeting businesses aligning with sustainability goals, recognising the pivotal role it plays in the future. MX Commercial positions itself as a proactive underwriter for emerging risks associated with modern and sustainable construction methods.
At the heart of it, the Government's climate pledge and push for efficiency boil down to securing a cleaner future. Every small change counts, and Niall emphasises that businesses can play a crucial role by adapting their processes.
Economic turbulence and its impact in the market
Brexit, the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, geopolitical conflicts and inflation, have collectively shaped a challenging landscape for businesses across all industries. The construction sector, in particular, bears the brunt, experiencing surges in overheads and costs attributed to escalating material prices. Despite potential challenges in the construction sector, Niall envisions a thriving landscape for innovative businesses that seek alternative opportunities and sustainable operational methods.
Anticipating 2024 and MX Commercial's trajectory
Looking ahead to the rest of 2024, Niall expresses confidence in MX Commercial's continued growth. The traditional and personable underwriting style within the teams has promoted robust bonds with brokers and partners.
What sets MX Commercial apart is that they’re the go-to MGA for non-standard construction risks that would typically sit outside the standard appetite for many insurers. MX Commercial’s reputation as key contacts in these unconventional territories stems from their unique approach as they're not just another MGA; they're problem solvers too.
MX Commercial prides itself on preventing businesses from going under due to insurance gaps. The skilled underwriters in the team understand the importance of analysing past risks, predicting future scenarios and always exploring unconventional solutions. Niall highlights that at MX Commercial, there is a true commitment to crafting solutions that benefit the client.
The pinnacle of job satisfaction
For Niall, the essence of MX Commercial lies in its people-driven ethos. The team, many of whom have been with the company for over a decade, contribute to a robust and inclusive culture. As a senior figure, Niall takes joy in witnessing colleagues grow and evolve in their roles, passing on his own experiences to encourage growth within the team. From an underwriting standpoint, the thrill lies in receiving a new risk and witnessing its journey from assessment to coverage; an endeavour that culminates in a sense of accomplishment.
“You get a buzz when you see the result of all the work you’ve put in.” – Niall Casey, Lead Liability Underwriter at MX Commercial
In summary, Niall's journey from part-time administration to Lead Liability Underwriter is emblematic of dedication and adaptability. MX Commercial's proactive stance on emerging risks and sustainability positions it as a resilient player in the face of external challenges. Niall's commitment to mentorship and cultivating a positive team culture underscores the significance of collaborative efforts in achieving collective success.
